Sheri Trepina's work is nationally recognized. Elements in nature are the theme for her textural collage art. She pulls inspiration from the landscape, collecting local leaves and grasses which she uses to create preliminary marks on to watercolor paper. Her process includes the layering of papers and watercolor washes to achieve a depth of texture and line. This movement of paint against these layers is thrilling to Sheri and gives her work and abstract quality.

Sheri says “Art can enliven our daily lives, remind us of what is important and can create a reference to the world around us”.

What is your medium and your process?

I primarily paint with watercolor, occasionally I include gouache and ink. I use regional leaves to make impressions on my paper and often cut these shapes out and use them for collage in the painting.

Describe what inspires your artwork

The landscape is my biggest inspiration. I love the shapes and texture in nature and how the seasons change how I view the land. Using leaves for example, to make initial marks on my paper allows me to document their unique veining, and developing the painting to completion is one way of telling some of the stories of my experience.

How would you describe your studio?

My studio has both functional space and vignette or presentation spaces. When visitors come to my studio to purchase art, I want them to be able to see my art functioning as it might in their home. I enjoy painting with local artists, so having room for other painters is important.

Do you have a favorite quote?

"When shared with the world, paintings find life nudging others in the direction of their own insides. That's what art does."  Sara Genn

When and why did you decide to become an artist? Why is this so important to you?

I embarked on a full time art career later in life. I raised a son, and built a career in the environmental industry first. When I was 30, my Mom died and I began to think deeply about my love of colour and the nurturing I received from my artistic family while growing up. I started to spend every bit of free time on art; classes, videos and lots of painting. Creating was soon consuming me in a lovely way. I stayed that course and began showing my work while I continued to learn and challenge myself. I love this life as an artist, I’m grateful for people and events that led me in this direction….It is an honor to be able to tell a story of inspiration through my art.
